by Sarah DyerThe first electronic musicians in the United States were the gay men in bands such as the Beach Boys, Aerosmith, and Pink Floyd.
Their influence continues today in dance, rock, and even rock ‘n’ roll, with the likes of Devo, Paramore, and the Smashing Pumpkins.
The musical style of those bands was more experimental and experimental-ish, and its influence is apparent in the current genre of indie rock.
The artists who brought this style of music to prominence have been dubbed “dance pioneers” in their own right, and have left an indelible mark on dance music history.
The early bands of the genre, such as New York electronic dance duo DJ Shadow and Seattle indie-rockers Deltron 3030, were pioneers in the style of their time, and many of today’s indie-pop artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Britney Spears have come from them.
The genre has also been credited with introducing new sounds to dance music, from house and dubstep to electronica, and it is a genre that has grown exponentially since the 1970s.
Devo started off as a duo, with bassist Matt Cassell (who went on to found Paramore) and drummer Mark Knopfler, but they also played gigs at the legendary Fillmore East.
The pair played live with the Beachboys, before the group split in 1979 and began playing shows on a smaller scale.
They had a successful solo career, with Cassell contributing vocals to their first album, The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me.
However, their popularity took a hit after the death of Cassell in 1993.
They released the solo debut, A New Day, in 1994, but the band was soon hit by a string of lawsuits, culminating in a 1999 class-action suit by Cassell’s daughter.
It wasn’t until the early 2000s that Cassells death was officially confirmed.
The band went on hiatus in 2002 and 2004, and Cassell and Knopffler returned in 2009 with the debut album Delton 3030.
The trio of Cassels, Knopfs, and guitarist Matt Cossette was nominated for a Grammy in 2013, and their third album, Deltonic, came out in 2016.
In 2018, the band released the album Devo.
It’s a more traditional, dance-oriented record than its predecessors, and although its lyrics may still have the appeal of the band’s earlier work, the new music is more electronic, influenced by the sound of electronic music and techno.
Devos sound has become increasingly influenced by other genres as well.
In 2016, singer/songwriter Jamie xx released the self-titled debut album.
The album has the sound and energy of a dance album, but it’s also more electronic.
Its title track, “The New Deltones,” has the familiar rhythm and flow of an electronic dance track, but instead of the familiar vocals, the track features an electronic synthesizer, and features an instrumental arrangement of the track.
The track’s music video was released in 2017, and was directed by the same actor who voiced Devo in the early films.
It features the dance music-heavy music video for “Polar Night.”
The video for that song is an orchestral piece that has a much heavier electronic feel to it than the song’s original sound.
DevoS second full-length, Derezzed, was released last year.
The group’s sound has remained more of a blend of house and electronica than the more dance-friendly style of its first two albums.
Devoid features the pop-rock-heavy sounds of the early ’90s with a much more electronic sound.
The new album’s songs are more melodic and more upbeat than the tracks from its first three albums.
Derez is also the first time Devo has released two studio albums.
Both albums have the sound, vibe, and tempo of dance music.
Devons first studio album, Love Is a Battlefield, was a self-released album released in 2014, and included a remix of the songs “Meltdown” and “Sneak Peek.”
The remix, “Penny,” features the track “The Man Is a Serial Killer,” which was written by the late, great James Murphy.
The remix was featured in the movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and a remix version of “The Day” by Dereez, the second track from Love Is A Battlefield, debuted on the singles singles “Kiss Kiss Bang” and the album’s single “Piece of You.”
Devo also released a live album in 2017 called Devo Live, which included two tracks from LoveIsABattlefield, “I Wish I Could Get You” and, of course, “Derezzled.”
The album was followed by a studio album in 2018 called
